A book I had some videos about said it was a bit of a fever dream, but a well-written and funny one at that. After reading the synopsis on the back of the book, I was sold. Frankenstein, AI, Dracula, vampires, werewolves, and aliens. I wanted to know just how they were going to combine all this in a story that would make sense. They not only did it, but did it well!
The book is told mostly from the perspective of a ship AI/supercomputer as it flies back and forth through space between Earth and one of its colonies. The only problem is that the ship is constantly under attack from paranormal threats itisn’t programmed to handle. The book does a really good job telling the story from an AI’s perspective in a funny, interesting way that keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat. Not only that, but the character development makes you really feel for a lot of its characters. It slowly introduces all these crazy pulp horror creatures in a way that actually makes sense until you reach the end of the book, in awe of how this ragtag team of creatures came to be. It is definitely a more humorous, shorter sci-fi story, but I would recommend it to anyone for a quick, easy, entertaining read that breaks the traditional mold. It also has one of the most wholesome and unlikely romances I have read in a hot minute, and I really enjoyed it.
I would give Of Monsters and Mainframes an 8/10
