During my VHS hunts, I always find myself drawn to these old terrible monster “Thrillers”. They always have the most wack ass plots, and when they were made, you just know the practical effects are either terrible CGI or so bad that it circles around to being funny. So when I saw Wasp Woman, “There is no greater wrath than a woman’s sting,” I was sold. As I write this, I have learned this is actually a remake of a movie made in 1959 with the same name. I 100% am going to find the 1959 version because it looks even worse than this movie.

The movie follows a woman who owns a cosmetics company and also models for it. She’s getting older, and it’s affecting her business. On the edge of being replaced by a younger, newer face, she desperately searches for a way to reverse her aging. During her research, she discovers a scientist working with wasp hormones, promising not only to stop aging but reverse it. Despite his objections, she becomes the first human test subject; meanwhile, a bunch of other test subjects have turned for the worse, becoming wasp monsters who go on killing sprees. Pan to our protagonist, who is seducing men and killing them, suddenly when she turns from woman to wasp monstrosity.

While I found the plot not that riveting, with quite a few wacky tangents scattered throughout. I thought the practical effects were actually pretty decent. The costumes and the smaller killer wasps were very 90’s but not in a bad way. The acting was alright, and they actually kept the sex scenes pretty PG, tame, raunchy, but with no nudity. I would love to see how well it sticks to the original 1959 script. I have definitely seen worse monster thrillers.
