Plant focus will be on the Canadian Lousewart (Pedicularis canadensis). This wildflower is native to the area and is actually a hemiparasite! While it does its own photosynthesis, it also taps into the roots of neighboring plants. It grows the hooded flowers seen in the photo with hairy leaves. It belongs to the broomrape family (Orobanchaceae) and was eaten as a vegetable, often used in soups or added to oats, and used as horse feed. The roots have some medical uses. It also has some folklore, being called the “enticer root” and worn as a charm to seduce the opposite gender, or fed to couples to fix broken relationships. Personally, I just thought the flowers looked cool haha!
