Louisiana
This was my first day back after a short hiatus to fly back and see family for the holidays! Also, my first hikes of the new year!!! Thought I would ease myself back into hiking with a few short hikes around some parks in Louisiana. Wanted to see just how different things were this far south and whether it was as swampy as I expected. Being winter, I feel I probably didn’t get the whole swamp experience, but there were still tons of pretty views and new things to see.

Including something I now know is super common down in the south! Palmetto! The ones I saw on this hike were the dwarf palmetto (Sabal minor). Or so I hope, honestly, all Palmettos kinda look the same to me lol. The dwarf palmetto is a short-trunked palm. These plants keep their “heart” underground and grow fan-like or palmate leaves that are iconic to the plant. They grow berries that provide food for all sorts of little critters and are cold- and flood-resistant, allowing them to thrive. They are in the Arecaceae family, along with other palms!
