Big Bend National Park
Big Bend NP was a long drive down with not a whole lot to look at. But Big Bend itself was beautiful! I got some amazing views and soaked up all the sunlight I could. It was hot during the hike, and I forgot what it was like to get a proper sweat going hiking. I will say the most memorable thing from Big Bend was how good the sunlight smelled. Quite a bit of elevation gain, but after the Grand Canyon it felt ez pz! Not a lot of critters other than some birds, but we still managed to find some neat plants, including….

The Agave havardiana, or the Havard Agave, or Century plant. A plant whose name is based on a myth that they live for 100 years when they typically live for 20 to 50 years. These plants bloom only once in their lifetime, growing up to 15ft tall. Once all the seeds fall, the plant dies. The plant is in the asparagus family, which, given how it looks, makes a little sense. These can be found at higher altitudes and should not be confused with the Agave lecheguilla, which is Big Bend’s most common Agave.
