Mariposa Grove!
Before leaving Yosemite, I decided to go to Mariposa Grove to get a sneak peek at some Sequoias before getting to Sequoia NP! Now, these aren’t the biggest, but man, are they massive! The Redwoods were tall, but the Sequioas are Thicc!
Had to take a short shuttle and did a little hike around the Grove. It looked like a fire had torn through the area a few years ago, which is actually good for new Sequoias, but not so pretty for viewing. There were tons of little critters doing the last of their foraging before winter!

The plant chosen for this hike was the Mountain Misery or Bear Clover (Chamaebatia foliolosa), named during the California Gold Rush for its large mats that cover large areas and its sticky leaves, which were a nuisance to miners. The sap is highly flammable and can be hazardous to firefighters. It is an evergreen, which makes it a pretty plant to look at even in the fall! Natives used it for all sorts of medicine, from colds to chickenpox. The plant belongs to the rose family and, unusually for other plants in its family, is documented to carry out nitrogen fixation. Don’t know too much about that, but it’s still neat!
After a half day in the park, we hit the road for the real deal, Sequoia National Park!
