I saw this movie on VHS and got pumped! You mean to tell me in the 1970s they made their own Cocaine Bear? Sign me up, no questions asked. I knew just by looking at the screenshots on the back of the box that this movie was going to be oh so good! The movie follows a group of park rangers as they deal with a killer bear that is killing anyone in its path. The movie definitely has its facepalm and hilarious moments, but it’s not a horror movie in my opinion, even a thriller would be a stretch. The ending was absolutely insane and, in true old movie fashion, had the credits rolling way sooner than I expected, which made me laugh. The crazy thing is, not a week later, my Dad told me there is a sequel with Charlie Sheen!?!?! I feel like I am committed now and will definitely be keeping my eyes out for a copy.
My Rating: 5.5 / 10
Now, if you know me, then you know grizzly bears are my favorite animal. So, of course, I looked into the bear that they used for the movie. The bear’s name was Teddy, and he was rented from the Olympic Game Ranch and was the largest Grizzly in captivity at the time, standing at 11ft tall! The bear was kept in an electric fence, and to shoot, they used a green wire and an electric timer to keep/trick the bear from getting too close to the actors. The bear also didn’t roar during the movie, and they gave him marshmallows to make it look like he was, and also to make him stand up. I love that little killer bear. Tossing little marshmallows to that cute little killer? I would swoon.
